Tube Amp Doctor – Silencer Attenuator 4ohms
The TAD Silencer Attenuator, rated at 4 ohms, is designed to reduce the output power and volume of a guitar amplifier. This is particularly useful for achieving the iconic rock guitar tones reminiscent of the ’60s and ’70s, which often require amplifiers to be turned up to full volume for the desired sound.
Tube guitar amplifiers are known to produce their best sound when loud, as the output stage saturation results in rich harmonic distortion, sustain, and a full-bodied tone. However, playing a 50 or 100 Watt amp at full volume can be damaging to the ears and disruptive to others. The Silencer™ addresses this issue by allowing all the amplifier components that contribute to tone quality (like preamp tubes, driver stage, output tubes, transformers, etc.) to remain at the player’s preferred settings, while the resulting volume is controlled post-output. The attenuation can be adjusted in 2db increments from full power down to -16db, and further fine-tuned to complete silence if desired.
Concerns about tone quality changes are common with power attenuators, as they often diminish brightness and bass definition. However, the Silencer™ employs Natural Tone Technology to preserve the guitar signal’s clarity and definition without affecting its brightness.
Additionally, the Silencer™ can function without speakers connected when the POWER switch is set to the LOAD position, acting as a Load-Box.
