The technique of Bebung (or “vibrato” in English) was the basis for this piece. Bebung is a type of vibrato particular to the technique and construction of the clavichord. It is obtained by modifying the pressure on one of the instrument’s keys, to produce an effect of slight pitch variations. A simple application of this principle would be, for example, when one instrumentalist attacks a note and another holds and “modulates” the note.
