Description

PO Ref. PO1646S

Clavichord by Henry Tull (1942) in excellent condition, commissioned and formerly owned by the distinguished British harpsichordist Millicent Silver (1905–1986), one of three main players in the UK during the 1950s and 1960s (the others being Thurston Dart and George Malcolm). Fully refurbished, serviced and regularly tuned by our keyboard technician prior to despatch. The walnut case showcases Tull’s fine skills as a cabinet-maker.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional instrument commissioned by a celebrated British early keyboard exponent.

After Arnold Dolmetsch, Henry Tull (1869–1958) was the first to make early keyboard instruments in England. Having originally manufactured pianos, from about 1921 he began to produce clavichords, octave spinets (called ‘octavinas’) and triangular spinets at his Chiswick workshop, all based on models created by Dolmetsch. His customers included many of the intellectual and artistic personalities of the era; he also supplied instruments for concerts and theatre plays.
