It is based on the opening pages of Gertrude Stein’s play, They Must. Be Wedded. To TheirWife. The first performance took place at Sadler’s Wells Theatre on 27th April 1937, with scenario, costumes and set designs by Berners himself, choreography by Frederick Ashton.
